Water and Colour Experiment

Room 6 had a great time, enjoying our first experiment with water and colour. We all had a very good look like good scientists do!

We left them overnight and the next morning we found that we made secondary colours again after we had done our wonderful 'Colour Wheel'. The water 'walked up' the paper towel and got into the middle cup, creating the secondary colour. Fun! :)

SPCA

We had a very exciting visit from Merryn and Richard from SPCA, Canterbury. We learnt what SPCA means and what they do. We also learnt that animals need the things that people need as well; like love, water, food, shelter, friends/family and exercise.

MATARIKI

Last week, we learnt about Matariki and Karen taught us a waiata as well! What a great afternoon!

"Shine A Light"

A few weeks ago, we all watched "Shine A Light". We enjoyed that afternoon and talked about the lesson that we learnt from that production.

We visited some countries!

We made our passports and visited Japan, China, Sri Lanka and South Korea!
In those countries, we learnt many things about them, then we completed our "Compare and Contrast Map".

Shodo Experience

Room 4, 5, 6 and 15 had a Japanese student this week. She showed us "Shodo", Japanese olden days writing. She used an ink-dipped brush to create Japanese charaters on a special piece of paper and the star or legend of the day from each class had their name done in Japanese!

New Zealand Sign Language Taster Class

Room 6 had a "Sign Language Taster Class" this week to support New Zealand Sign Language Week. Dennis Tod was the Tutor teaching us and he taught us a lot of NZSL including greeting, colours, numbers, alphabets and some animals. It was a very special opportunity and we had a lot of fun.
The children received some resource like Let's Talk booklet, Fingerspelling card and "Sign Ninja" information card.
Here are some other links that you can have a look at as well:
Other NZSL Week activities
Go to www.nzslweek.org.nz and take part to learn 7 signs in 7 days online.  Everyone who takes part in the class goes into the draw to win spot prizes.

Sign Ninja is an online game that enables people to learn New Zealand Sign Language.  The game can be played online on PC or Mac, on tablets, and smartphones.  Sign Ninja is a fun and engaging interactive game with webisode elements and education about NZSL. We will be launching a new zone “Sign Ninja: Mythical Marae” later this year.

My Favourite Sign is a fun way for everyone to get involved with NZSL Week.  All you need to do is to pick a word that means something to you and video yourself signing it.  You can upload your video onto social media with #myfavouritesign as the hashtag.

Remember, the best way to communicate with a Deaf person is to book a qualified NZSL interpreter.

Deaf Aotearoa is a not-for-profit organisation and if you would like to support our work by way of a donation, you can do so by visiting www.deaf.org.nz
